The Phantom Of The Opera

Instead of a standard review I’m going to *try* and write up what is called a; Character Analysis. Which is commonly used within the acting industry, especially in training where the actor must analyse their character.
Now I’m really quite crap at Character Analysis that’s why I always get the low grades for that at College. I’m going give it a bash.
Just a wee disclaimer, this is probably not accurate and is something of I seen and thought about, it’s not a personal thing and if Scott sees this Analysis then I wouldn’t mind some feedback (preferably without the Punjab lasso). Let’s Rock & Roll!

Physical:

The physical side of the Phantom is very important, as facial expressions are brought to a minimum due to the high amount of make up and the masking of the face. It was important for Scott to act through his body to make the character believable. Scott got the physicality of the Phantom spot-on throughout most of the show. His downfall was the final lair but I’ll talk more about that when I talk about the mental attributes of the character.

Scott kept the posture of the Phantom brilliantly with keeping the back straight but relaxed and his chin level with the ground, this is a nice posture for the Phantom and it also helps with singing.
His beautiful walking grace gives him the perfect stage presence which is much needed for this character.

Emotional/Mental:

This is where the character comes from. “within”. A good actor will do their research of the character. You can usually tell if an actor has done little or no research as the character will be very bland and have no depth. It was clear that Scott had done his research of the character and that he spent a bit of time pre-show bringing the character within him. To make the character known to the audience Scott had to inject the emotional part of the Phantom into the vocal and physical parts of the Phantom. This he did well. The Music Of The Night is a great example of good character adaptation. He must show his passion for Christine, in which he highly succeeds with his movement and vocal skills, this all happens with the injection of the mental to the physical and vocal.

Unfortunately all actors have their downfall and what is quite disappointing is Scott’s downfall came within the final lair where he let’s Christine and Raoul go. Scott to me now wasn’t playing the character, he was the character +. Now you maybe saying that, that should be a good thing. Whilst it shows that Scott has an amazing ability to put himself into a role, an actor must always be aware of who he actually is, he is actually Scott Davies and not The Phantom Of The Opera. An actor should play the character smoothly and with depth however when he starts to become the character too much, this is where problems arise.
Scott from what I was seeing became the character too much and this made that part of the scene look a little over the top. Because he built the Phantom up too it seemed he forgot his focus and let himself go and lost his physicality. However when Christine came back to give him the ring back this is when the turning point arises again, he was now back in control and became the loving Phantom again which led to a very powerful ending.

Vocally:

This is where I couldn’t really see fault. As Scott is a trained Opera singer he knows a lot about the voice and how to use it to it’s full potential.
His soaring vocals are exactly what the character of the Phantom needs, it’s score is rather Operatic and Scott’s vocals are very well suited to the character.
When he needed to be soft and gentle he was, when he needed to be loud and powerful he was.
His posture, I.E back straight and chin level with the floor is the ideal singing posture so this helped him to produce more clear and controlled vocals.

What Could Have Been Improved:

Well let’s take a look at his major fault within the show. The final lair.
If my predictions are correct and it was him letting the character take him then what he could of done is took a wee step back and thought, “No I am the actor controlling the character”. I can understand it isn’t easy to pull down a character but trying to not get swept away can make all the difference.

Overall his Character was strong and shown all sides of the Phantom’s attitude towards Christine and the other characters. He looked the part which is just as important and singing the part and made it a believable ride through the story.
